A Chat About Female Viagra in South Africa

What I’ve Seen Over the Years in Our Local Pharmacies

Hello, my friend.

So look, I’ve been working in pharmacy here in South Africa for goodness, must be over 20 years now. I’ve seen all sorts of things come and go – fad diets, miracle teas, all those tummy flatteners. But lately, more and more women have been asking me about something that was always thought of as "for men only", Female Viagra. Yep. It’s a real thing, and yes, it can help. Let’s talk about it like we would at the counter. No stiff lab coats here, just me and you.

Wait, Female Viagra? That’s a thing?

Yup, it is. It's not exactly new, but not a lot of people talk about it openly, you know how we are sometimes, ne? But the truth is, more women are finally speaking up about issues in the bedroom. And why not? If something’s not working the way it used to, stress, hormones, age, whatever, you should be allowed to do something about it, without the whispering and raised eyebrows.

Female Viagra, at least the one most people mean when they ask me, is just the regular sildenafil citrate (that’s the same active ingredient in regular Viagra), but adjusted in dose, and sometimes in how it’s used, to help women instead of men. It's not magic, it doesn’t suddenly make you wild with desire or anything like that, but it can help with blood flow, sensitivity, and even arousal, depending on what the issue is. It’s not for everyone, but for some women, it really works.

Okay, but is it legal in SA?

Ah, now we’re getting to the juicy stuff. Yes, Female Viagra (the sildenafil citrate kind) is legal in South Africa, but, and this is important, it’s technically a prescription-only medicine. So if you waltz into your pharmacy and ask for it without a script, chances are you’ll be told no. That said some online pharmacies have found ways to offer it with an "online consultation" or through partner doctors. I’m not here to point fingers, just saying, that’s what’s going on out there.

Can I buy it online?

You can, sure. There are a few online pharmacies operating here in SA, some better than others. You want to be careful, though. Don’t go clicking on some dodgy overseas site with flashing red banners and promises like "HOTTEST SEX EVER GUARANTEED", I mean, come on. You know better. Stick with names that are either South African or have a local rep, and check that they’re registered with the SA Pharmacy Council.

Usually, the process goes something like this: you fill in a quick health form, a registered doctor (well, hopefully) reviews it, and if they approve, boom, your pills are in the mail. I know women in Joburg and Cape Town who swear by this because they hate queues and small talk with pharmacists. I get it.

What’s it going to cost me?

Ah, the million-rand question. Prices vary, hey. In-store, a generic sildenafil tablet might cost anywhere from R25 to R80 per pill, depending on the strength and brand. Online, you might find packs of 10 for around R300–R600. Look for bundle deals, some sites offer "buy 2, get 1 free" or discounted delivery if you order more than a month’s supply. And trust me, always compare prices, I’ve seen price differences of R200 for exactly the same product.

Is delivery safe?

Mostly, yeah. The better online pharmacies use discreet packaging, so your neighbour won’t know you’ve ordered anything besides a pair of socks. Courier services like Aramex or The Courier Guy are often used, and delivery takes 2–3 working days, sometimes longer if you’re in a smaller town. Just keep your phone on, the drivers always call when they’re outside, even if they don’t know how to pronounce your street.

What about people in Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, etc?

Let me tell you, it’s different in every city.

In Cape Town, folks tend to lean into natural stuff first (herbal teas, maca powder, yoga...), but more women there are starting to explore sildenafil. I’ve had customers there tell me, "I didn’t know this was even for women!"

In Johannesburg, it’s fast-paced, so the online route is super popular. People don’t want to wait, they just want results.

Durban, well, the heat must help with the romance already, but yes, I do get orders from there too.

Pretoria is more conservative sometimes, but I know a few older clients there who buy it quietly, no fuss. And hey, if it helps the marriage, what’s the harm?

Even in smaller towns, Nelspruit, East London, Polokwane, the word’s spreading. Internet access means anyone can get in on the action now, not just city folks.

So does it actually help women?

Short answer: for many, yes. I’ve had women, some in their 30s, some in their 60s, come back and say they felt a difference. More sensation, easier to "get in the mood", less frustration during sex. But it’s not a cure-all. If your struggles are mostly emotional or relationship-based, the pill can’t fix that. Talk to your partner. Maybe even a therapist. But if it’s physical, dryness, sensitivity, slow arousal, this little blue pill might just give you that nudge.

Also, take it about an hour before you want to, you know start the engines. And don’t mix it with too much booze, that just kills the effect.

So that’s my little chat for today. I’m not here to sell you anything, just to say, it’s your body, your life. If Female Viagra sounds like something that might help, talk to your GP, or a pharmacist you trust. Or go online, just be smart about it.

Until next time,
Thabo, your friendly neighbourhood pharmacist from Gauteng
